In an island of just over one million inhabitants (1.4 million in Trinidad), the likelihood of finding an international athlete is very small. Further to which, when you decrease the sample size to roughly fifty thousand (50,000 – the population of our sister isle, Tobago), the chances are even fewer. When you consider that there are over 300 million athletes playing football worldwide, the chances of landing a career in the world’s most popular sport seems more and more unlikely. Therefore, it is without a doubt that the phenomenon that is Dwight Eversley Yorke is nothing short of astounding.
Born on November 03, 1971, Dwight is the most accomplished footballer ever from the shores of Trinidad & Tobago. In the world of football, Yorke is a household name with legendary status that has performed at the top level in the most popular football club in the world, Manchester United. Throughout his club career, he played for Aston Villa, Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, Sydney and Sunderland, mainly as a forward, between the years of 1988 and 2009. Dwight scored 123 goals in the Premier League, a record for a non-European which was not broken until Sergio Agüero in 2017. His goal scoring record stood for almost a decade! One of his greatest successes at club level was as a Manchester United striker winning the unique treble of the Premier League championship, the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in 1999.And of course, at an international level, Yorke represented Trinidad and Tobago on seventy four (74) occasions between 1989 and 2009, scoring 19 goals.
