Nobody could have guessed that 2020 would have started like this. Well at least nobody other than Bill Gates. About 5 years ago, Gates told the world that we were not ready for the next pandemic. He said that very little was being done to prepare the world for a viral-attack, and unfortunately, it happened. On the contrary, everyone was making big plans for “the new decade”, “a new chapter”, “the new beginning” and “the big breakthrough”. Many people told themselves “this (2020) is going to be my year”. The world was celebrating and communities across the globe were not ready for what was coming next. Then it hit. But do we even understand what happened? Do we understand what is currently happening? And how do we deal with the present crisis? When is this going to end? And how do we prepare for the future?
Fashion Focus is by no means a medical journal, so our information is pretty generic. What we have learnt is that Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).The disease was first identified in 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic.Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.Other symptoms may include muscle pain, sputum production, diarrhea, sore throat, loss of smell, and abdominal pain.
It’s important to note that he virus is mainly spread during close contact and via respiratory droplets produced when people cough or sneeze. People may also contract COVID-19 by touching a contaminated surface and then their face. The virus can survive on surfaces up to 72 hours. Time from exposure to onset of symptoms is generally between two and fourteen days, with an average of five days. The recommended measures to prevent infection include frequent hand washing, social distancing (maintaining physical distance from others, especially from those with symptoms), covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or inner elbow, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face. As at March 30, 21:00 there are over 784,000 Coronavirus cases with 37,789 deaths. At this time, there is no known vaccine for this disease, so countries all over the world are doing what they can to contain further spread through limiting human interaction and operating on essential services exclusively.
The reality is that the whole world will be changed forever. Apart from the devastating loss of life resulting from the strain on the global health sector, the world economy has been crippled for an indeterminate amount of time. The retail garment and entertainment sectors are practically non-existent.
The history of civilization suggests that mankind can persist. Global leaders have said that the situation will get worse before it gets better, and that’s only because some people are just not going to follow instructions. Both the United States of America & Italy have surpassed 150,000 & 100,000 infections respectively, and the numbers continue to rise. However, there are some clearer skies ahead as some countries have immobilized the threat with little to no new infections being recorded. So how does fashion fit into all of this? Maybe we will have some post-COVID-19 staples like designer facemasks or gloves as accessories to your everyday ensemble. We will get through this.
