Local tailors benefit from Savile Row Academy training

FashionTT is the organisation responsible for the business and export growth of the fashion industry.  One of the key impediments to sustained growth in the industry is limited access to consistent and skilled labour. In this regard, FashionTT has partnered with the Saville Row Academy and Metal Industries Company Ltd (MIC) to host the Ultra Bespoke Tailoring Programme.   Students enrolled in this programme will be trained in the prestigious trade of bespoke tailoring under the tutelage of renowned Trinidadian born Saville Row tailor Professor Andrew Ramroop.

Professor Andrew Ramroop OBE, Founder of the Savile Row Academy, Master Tailor and Director of Maurice Sedwell, bespoke tailors of Savile Row. Ramroop has won more awards and accolades such as the Mayor of London Trailblazer Award, Excellence Award, Chaconia Gold award, Institute of Directors Business Award and British Black Business Person of the year [2017], to name just a few.

Teaching for the Ultra Bespoke Tailoring Programme commenced on on March 5, 2018. Over the period of a year students learned technical tailoring skills from Professor Ramroop.  The tailoring modules were as follows:

Module 1 – The Foundation Module

Module 2 – Pattern Drafting

Module 3 – Trousers and Waistcoats

Module 4 – Jacket Making

Senator the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry, had also expressed her support for the tailoring programme and emphasized the importance of the fashion industry in the government’s thrust away from oil and gas. “This project takes us one step further from our reliance on oil and gas and one step closer to honouring the talents of our creative sector, especially those within the fashion industry.”

On Saturday 9th March, 2019, FashionTT under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with Metal Industries Company Ltd held the final showcase of the students under the Ultra Bespoke Tailoring Programme (UBTP). The showcase took place at the at Stollmeyer’s Castle. Attendees of the event included members of the diplomatic core, business persons, media and family members of the student.  The Minister of Trade and Industry gave the feature address.
